AFTER LIFE

BY: Kooky Farooky

Chapter One:

I am tired.

Tired of this life. Tired of this world.

I'm sad all the time. Or angry. Maybe both.

I can't tell anymore. I'm drunk more than I'm sober. High all the time so I am not low.

I don't have a job. I don't have any money.

The payments are months behind. Nothing's coming in.

Maybe that's what bothers me the most. Not being able to provide. Not being useful. Not being me.

My family betrayed me. They don’t care. Maybe they never did.

I don’t care either. Nobody does.

That’s the truth.

The only thing I do is take my daughter to school and pick her up.

I love that. I love her.

She's the best thing in my life.

That's why this is the right time. The best time.

She's still young. She won't remember much. Just the good times.

Christmas, though. It’ll be ruined. It should be. Ruined for them all.

It's time.

I know.

You tried.

I know.

You don't belong here anymore.

I know.

I've practiced this a hundred times. Maybe more.

It has to be today.

This is the right path.

The clock. 11:11. That’s good luck. Not that luck matters anymore.

One last drink. One more hit. One last time.

Finish it all before the last breath.

Make the call.

I will.

Do it now.

I am.

"911. What's your emergency?"

"Can you send a unit to the Lowe's parking lot on Higley and Queen Creek? I'm parked in the back."

"Sir, are you okay? Tell me what's happening."

"There are two letters with me. Please make sure they get where they're supposed to."

"Stay with me, okay? Just keep talking to me."

"And remind my wife..."

Finish this.

"...that I need to be buried within twenty-four hours."

"Sir, please stay on the line."

This has to be done.

Do it.

“Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa-Allah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul-Allah.”

Everything will be better.

I know.

Take a breath.

Squeeze.

AFTER LIFE

BY: Kooky Farooky

Chapter Two:

Sandra will be at her mom's house with her brother and three sisters, drinking all day.

The usual gang will be there.

It's the same every Christmas.

The day starts early for the bunch.

They'll all be crowded around the kitchen, talking while they cook, drink, and laugh louder than anything is actually funny.

The room will be full of conversation.

It’s just noise.

Her phone will buzz.

It's always silent. Always face down.

She's never too far from it. She'll see the call.

Gilbert Police Department.

There are only a handful of reasons the police would call her.

None of them belong on Christmas Day.

She'll step outside to the patio to answer in private.

Secrets under the blanket of privacy.

How will she take the news?

"Ma'am... your husband is dead."

They'll tell her I committed suicide.

Will she collapse? Probably not.

Will she start wailing? Only when her dog died.

Will she have a breakdown? Not over me.

She'll hold herself together.

She was expecting this, anyway.

It's not like we hadn't talked about me ending my life before.

She'll cry.

Anyone would.

Her mom will stumble outside after her.

She'll wrap her in a hug.

It’s all just another performance.

The family is full of drama.

The house will suddenly become quiet.

Conversations will change.

The drinks will turn to shots.

Christmas will come to a halt.

At least for the day.

There will be tears.

There will be hugs.

Sharing meaningless memories.

All fake.

Because nobody, really, actually, cared.

Their lives will go on.

Maya will know something is wrong.

She’ll feel it. She's only five, but she's smart.

She doesn’t understand death but she’ll know something bad has happened.

They'll ask Sandra to stay.

Because it’s Christmas day.

But she can’t wait on this.

The officer told her that I asked to be buried within twenty-four hours.

She has to go home and take Maya with her.

She’ll cry on the way home.

Maya will see it.

It’s nothing new.

Sandra will call Maricela and have her come over to watch Maya.

She’ll come, even on Christmas day.

She’s a great nanny.

She'll take wonderful care of Maya.

For that, I'll always be grateful.

Sandra will call my sister, Seema.

We haven't spoken in years.

The call won't be about us.

It'll be about what comes next with the Muslim burial.

Seema’s physician role at the Hospital will make the whole thing a lot easier.

While waiting for the nanny, Sandra will send out a bunch of texts.

She’ll just send a group message to her family.

Mike and Jackie will get one for sure.

She’ll text the guy she’s been hanging out with here.

Make plans to go see her ex-husband in another state.

It doesn't matter anymore.

My opinions end along with my life.

She just needs to take care of my daughter and raise her as a good Muslim.

AFTER LIFE

Chapter Three:

Seema will be driving home from the hospital when Sharon calls.

She'll remain composed through the conversation.

She always does.

She has to.

We haven't spoken in years.

My death won't come as a complete surprise.

She expected I'd die soon anyway.

Either it was going to be alcohol poisoning, or a drug overdose.

Suicide.

She won’t see that coming.

She'll want to know how I died.

And where I did it.

Sharon will tell her.

Seema will immediately try to control the situation.

That's who she is.

Seema doesn’t participate unless it’s her event.

But Sharon won't make it easy.

Sharon isn't on her payroll.

They'll agree to meet at the hospital.

On the drive home, Seema will call Hussain first, just to get it out of the way.

He'll want to know more.

She'll cut him off.

She won't go into details.

It would be a source of enjoyment for him.

She should have been calling Baba and Ami in Pakistan first.

They're twelve hours ahead.

It'll be well past midnight.

Baba will answer.

He always answers her.

She'll tell him what happened.

She'll explain that she's helping Sharon because she doesn't know what to do.

He'll ask how I died.

And why.

She'll tell him it was a gunshot to the head.

That alcohol and drugs were found in my system.

He won't ask any more questions.

He'll simply begin to pray.

The call will end when Ami starts crying uncontrollably.

That'll be the hardest part.

Her final call will be to Arafat Mammo, my uncle in Florida.

Her mentor.

For a psychiatrist, he never gave good advice.

At least, not to me.

He'll notify the rest of the family.

The news will spread quickly.

The mourning won't last long.

Life rarely stops for very long.

Out of sight. Out of mind.

When Seema gets home, she'll tell her kids.

Ali and Mya haven't seen me in years.

They'll be saddened, but they'll move on.

The other two being around Maya’s age, they won't remember much.

Children rarely do.

That's a blessing.

That’s why my death matters less right now.

Seema will begin texting friends.

One after another.

In the order of her biggest cheerleaders.

She'll start with Matt, her gay gym buddy.

Then the nannies.

The nurses.

Coworkers.

Colleagues.

Friends.

Even foes.

By the time she reaches the hospital, the news will already have spread.

Many of her coworkers will know.

They'll hug her.

Offer condolences.

She'll accept them.

When she and Sharon see me lying on the table, they'll both cry.

nyone would.

Then they'll talk about my burial.

Sharon will ask how much everything will cost.

Seema won't know.

But she'll offer to help.

She knows Baba will insist on paying for his son's burial.

Sharon will tell her about the two letters I left behind.

One for her.

One for Maya.

Seema will be surprised there isn't one for her.

Or for anyone else in the family.

She'll ask what's in them.

Would want to read them.

Sharon won't hand over the letter addressed to her.

She’ll let Seema read Maya's letter.

They'll cry again.

Then Sharon will tell her about the part of my letter where I didn’t want her or Hussain any part of the funeral.

That'll hurt good.

It'll make her angry.

She’ll refuse to sign the death certificate.

It shouldn’t be her signature anyway.

My body will still need to be transported.

She'll tell Sharon she'll have to figure it out on her own.

Then she'll walk away.

She won't acknowledge anyone on her way out of the hospital.

She'll need time.

Time to think.

Time to analyze.

Time to decide what my death can mean to her.

I just hope she loses her jealousy towards Maya and genuinely take care of her.

She is the only piece I leave behind in this world.

MY FIGHT WITH DEMONS

BY: Kooky Farooky

It was not the first time I had been attacked by demons, but this time their presence was clear. The darkness had drawn near to put an end to my life. It was then that I decided I would not make it that easy for him to get rid of me. I would fight back.

No Peace
(Regret, Remorse)

BY: Kooky Farooky
Poem - No Peace.jpg

It’s been a while since my life’s been this way

I sit on the porch with my eyes closed all day

Dreaming of the life…what it could have been

If I had someone to keep me calm and sane

Now I find myself in this square block

Living with the sins that I can’t recall

I transgressed. I got lost. I went astray.

Believing in people full of jealousy and hate

Did very little good and I did a lot of bad

My repentance does not even stand a chance

Time to decide which way to go

Part of me wants to go up, but my abode is way below

I could ask for forgiveness. I would repent

There is no path that leads me to Heaven.

What could have been will never be

I live with myself with no peace

I see the light, but I can’t reach

I dug myself in too deep

I cry myself to sleep each night

Thinking about the past and my life

It was so bright, I was so full of hope

It came crashing down by those that were close

There is no one else to blame, it’s all on me

I am reminded of it with tears on my cheeks

Morning would be the time I stood up to fight

Battle was lost before the end of the night

My regrets are bad, my remorse is worse

I have done things, I am not proud of

I was not right. I was blinded by greed.

The lighthouse was behind me, I was swimming out to sea

I was fighting for air, grasping for breath

Asking my Lord to pull me out of the mess

But all is lost now. There is nothing more

As I sit on the porch…with my eyes closed

What could have been will never be

I live with myself with no peace

I see the light, but I can’t reach

I dug myself in too deep

Judgement Day
(Life of Sin)

Poem - Judgement Day.jpg
BY: Kooky Farooky

There will come a time when we will be judged

Stand before our God, in the blistering sun

Begging for our turn, which will never come

Repeating His words we have long forgotten

Hoping for forgiveness, pleading for our skin

We spent our entire life chasing sins.

But the day has arrived as He promised

When we will be requited for what we did

Now we stand looking dazed

We know very well what’s going to be our fate.

All praise be to the Lord of the Worlds

The Most Gracious and the Most Merciful

Master of the day of Requital

We ask HIM for Mercy and we ask HIM for Grace

We look to our Saints, and we look to our Saviors

But they are standing close to their Believers

Casting a shadow over as many as they can

We are too far away from any blessing

We jump up and down, cry for help

Hoping to get noticed from a far distance

We will be here forever nonetheless

Bowing and praying for our turn

Waiting in line for judgement that may never come

(The heat of these days will be our demise)

All praise be to the Lord of the Worlds

The Most Gracious and the Most Merciful

Master of the day of Requital

We ask HIM for Mercy and we ask HIM for Grace

We see a shadow of an Angel, coming our way

We hope that he comes real near

Provide some shade, water to drink

Point us towards our final destination

So we can begin our last migration

The Angel passes without a look

Leaving us right where we stood

Centuries have passed, not a drop to swallow

We will be here forever, God only knows

There are billions of souls, too many to count

The wait will be eternity; I know where I am bound

When day of judgment has finally comes

HE points me in the opposite direction

Matching my deeds, counting my sins

Doesn’t look like I am going to Eden

There is too much weight on the wrong side

Going to Hell on a self-designated ride

All praise be to the Lord of the Worlds

The Most Gracious and the Most Merciful

Master of the day of Requital

We ask HIM for Mercy and we ask HIM for Grace

If only I had one more day

I would give all my wealth away

Lay down prostrate for heaven’s sake

Repent for the sins I committed for years

It’s that one chance that is all I need

I will adopt many orphan families

I will visit the sick and feed the needy

Be grateful for all HIS Grace

Save me from the punishment in Hell

Hate On Me
(Hate, Self-Loathing, Bullying)

BY: Kooky Farooky
A poem about being bullied, being different, and being picked on. Overcoming discrimination

It’s okay it happens to me
I live with it indiscriminately
People like to hate on me
Because they don’t like what they see

I’m a little strange, I’ll admit
Not quite the mold, I will never fit
I speak, I move, I see things weird
A human with blood beneath my layers
Bones like yours, nerves that sting
Words that cut deep. They really cling

Some nights, I sit and let it play
This bullying…it must go away

It’s okay I’ve come to believe
The problem must lie within me
People like to hate on me
Because they’re scared of what they see

I blame myself, for what they say
I am the one born this way
So I retreat, avoid the eyes
Avoid their stares, their whispered lies

They flinch like I’m a walking curse
Afraid they’ll catch... something worse
Afraid that if they meet my eyes
They’ll see a mirror they despise

It’s okay it’s the same old routine
The world forgets people like me
People like to hate on me
The silence helps them live and breathe

I’ve seen the headlines come and go
Outrage flickers, then it blows
They march, they post, they hashtag grief
But justice comes with no relief

When the cameras fade away
I still live this, every day
I brace myself for every slight
For every name, they throw at night

It’s okay I tell myself
While battling my darkest self
People like to hate on me
But they can never hate me, as much as me.

I’ve cursed myself a thousand times
I’ve lost my grip, crossed many lines
Ashamed of rage that wasn’t right
I’ve bruised my spirit and my mind
The fight outside...I turned within

Causing myself all the pain
I’m still here, I’m still in this fight

I won't give up, not tonight

It’s okay, it happened to me
But it won’t be the end of me

People like to hate on me
And I will always be who I need to be.

Poem Image - When Demons Came for Me - March 2026.png

The last assault on me wasn’t for show

It wasn’t just one, he sent two of those

Their attack wasn’t metaphorical

There was actual pain that followed

Going down my neck, back and into my soul

For the first time in my life, I saw demons float

While they resided right here in my home

It was their shape and hair that stood out in the shadows

Nudging me to continue on the wrong course

Just like he had done to his brother just awhile ago

I was supposed to just as easily go

With a block of cocaine up my nose

Or a bullet I put right in my own throat

With no one left to care about or to care for

But little did that little fucker know

I am a man of Faith and to only HIM I fold

God has plans for me to expose his pathetic discourse

Skilled worshiper of the devil, that’s who he follows

No amount of cash can save him from his own downfall

It’s his face and eyes that show his evil galore

My force was set against the demons, I wasn’t ready to go

I had to prepare for battle, with these unseen demonic force

Let them come at me again I’m ready for more

With the Angels and Jinn to protect me, it’s a fight he will forgo

Because I follow only God’s word, he fucked with the wrong bro

HE will bring down his evil ways with an epic downpour

You have my word.

When Demons Came For Me
(Fighting Demons)

BY: Kooky Farooky

Precious Commodity
(Addiction)

BY: Kooky Farooky
A poem about addiction.

I am depressed, angry and alone

Addicted to booze, pills and porn.

In faith I am finding hope

Praying to the Creator, our Lord

To make me healthy, strong and whole.

I will never fail you, you will always be with me

Spend each night together, sleep in symmetry.

Sometimes you hurt, sometimes you bring fun

Every moment turns into an epic one.

You make me sing, you make me dance

End up hanging out, late with the band.

Wherever I go, you’re right there too

Hiding behind a glass of something new.

Time we spend, laughs we share

Together we make a good pair.
You’re the one who always stays

My laughter, my tears, our escapades.

First thing I reach for when I am in need

A little bit of comfort…a little bit of peace

You have always been there for me

You are my precious commodity

You make me nervous, hard to think

You pull me close, to ruin’s brink.
I’ve started fights I could’ve skipped

All because I took those sips.

My parents hate you, they call you vice

I call you a friend by my side.

My kids stop calling when you’re around

Their eyes go quiet. Their smiles drown.
Still, I defend you. You’re worth the pain

A flare in fire, a rush in rain.

You don’t mind. You never cared.

You’ll never leave, you’ll always be there.

First thing I reach for when I am in need

A little bit of comfort…a little bit of peace

You have always been there for me

You are my precious commodity

I don’t blame you, you are worth the trouble

I will take you as my friend over any other.

My girl says it’s a problem

One of us must go, that’s her ultimatum.

Maybe we need some time apart

Not forever, it’s a start.
Let’s meet again in moderation

I owe my soul some restoration.

This is the last time, I swear it’s true

One more night, just me and you.
I know you’ll call, you always do

But I’ll be busy, working through.

We had great times, we really partied

Now I am going to live a life of sobriety.

I am depressed, angry and alone

Addicted to booze, pills and porn.

In faith I am finding hope

Praying to the Creator, our Lord

To make me health, strong and whole.

Stressing About Things
(Anxiety)

BY: Kooky Farooky
A poem about anxiety, economy and being able to make ends meet.

It has never been so tense for me

I wake up most nights stressing about things

Life’s gotten harder, I am breaking

Can’t tunnel out of this cave in

Harder I work, deeper I go

Why can’t I dig myself out of this hole

Work two jobs, nothing to show

Can’t seem to buy fruit for my home

Taxes are high, my income is low

Politicians are eating their cake slow

My car is broken, I can’t afford gas

Can’t even buy a stinking metro pass

I go to stores, I can’t buy things

Have to check pricing on everything

It’s amazing to me where they have gone

Cost of milk in scores and gallons

We’ve cut down, we don’t eat cheese

Soda and juice are not necessities

There was a time when I bought beers in cases

Now I am down to drinking Ole English

We had scotch, whiskey all over

We don’t drink wine from bottles anymore

My clothes are old, my socks are ripped

I put on a fake smile in hopes of getting tips

It’s my second job that’s killing me

Bus boy in a restaurant or driving a taxi

Never before have I scraped for change

Find coins in the couch or between seat cushions

Electricity has been shut before, phone bill late

Sitting in the dark house with no way to communicate

Hoping someone would open the gate

Let a little light shine down on my fate

Pull it together, catch my breath

Before I choke or suffocate

I am not greedy, it’s not for show

Raking in millions is not my goal

It’s not much I ask for

I am not looking for a jackpot

I want to make just enough to eat

Maybe afford a few luxuries

Not needing two jobs to furnish my needs

Be able to take care of my entire family

It has never been so tense for me

I wake up most nights stressing about things

Life’s gotten harder, I am breaking

Can’t tunnel out of this cave in

Wind In The Rain
(Redemption)

BY: Kooky Farooky
A poem about the last moment in life.

When life is in your final round

Large drops of rain start forming ponds

All you can do is stand on your ground

Hoping you can weather this storm

Knee deep in water, your vessel starts to float

In a direction, towards where there is no shore

The sun dies right in front of your eyes

And the cold wind starts to take its flight

Dark and alone, you embrace them both

Let the rain in the wind pour

Every drop of rain the wind dries

You drift further away into the night

Only the dark moon shines its light

Your vision is limited to your mind

The world behind you continues to grow

You float around hoping to go

The sun will rise, it’s something you know

Wind starts to howl, water continues to pour

Lost and scared, you embrace them both

Let the wind in the rain blow

You see a light under that moon

Your heart loses a beat, just at the view

As you start to get close

Wind decides to take another course

You cry out to Him, say His word

A thunderous crack tears through your soul

It’ll be alright now, you embrace them both

Let the wind in the rain blow

All is lost, you cannot hold

When you realize you are moving no more

Stuck in the middle, water all around

You take a leap of Faith onto the ground

No more rain drops pour down your face

All of a sudden a large Golden Gate appears

You are whisked inside, wind sails you away

You find yourself in a heaven’s tale

Where the sun shines and rivers sail

The rain and wind were your saving grace
